"Today we strengthen our bond through athletic competition with our Korean friends and neighbors" said Brig. Gen. Darryl Williams, the Second Infantry Division deputy commanding general for support, in his opening remarks. "Today is not about who wins and who loses, it's about coming together and having fun." Following remarks, the opening ceremony continued with Korean traditional dancing, some photo opportunities and the official opening of the games. "We were surprised of how big of a turnout it was with the different officials," said Sgt. Matthew Hanzlik, of the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion team. There were several teams that played ball during the preliminary rounds, before the main tournament that took place. A total of seven teams participated; four Korean (two each men and women) and three American (all men's). "This is the sixth time we've done this tournament" said Yoo, Sung-ok, president of the local PTPI chapter, "and I believe that we can contribute to the friendship between United States Forces Korea Soldiers and the citizens of Pyeongtaek City through this kind of combined event." "It's a lot of fun out here," said Air Force Staff Sgt. Lynsey Bruzzi, assigned to the 51st SFS at Osan Airbase. "It's nice that something as simple as softball can bring everyone together. I'm out here playing with Koreans and the language barrier is not an issue." "It's cool," said Oh, Se-won, 12, who was attending and watching his father play for the Kia Motors team. "My father bats many home runs," he added. "I like this place. I like Americans. My dream is to be in the U.S. Army someday." Lunch was served to all participants and there was an awards ceremony at the end, where Col. Darin S. Conkright, Humphreys garrison commander, and Col. Walter T. Rugen, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade commander, presented trophies to the winners and most valuable players. In the men's bracket, Humphreys United finished first and Kia placed second. On the women's side, Pyeongtaek United Team B placed first and Pyeongtaek United Team A finished second. Lee, Kyong-won, the national president of PTPI Korea, summed up the days' events by saying, "Thank you for taking time to be out here, to make this softball tournament a success. I hope you enjoyed your game today. Thank you so much for your friendship and support."
